A team of 8 Welsh Archers made the journey to Scotland for the SFAA National Championships which were held on the 7th and 8th of July. The tournament was hosted by Drum Field Archers at their course near Edinburgh. The Welsh team acquitted themselves well, bringing home 4 gold medals..

It was the first time for many years that archers from Wales have made the journey up north and the famous Scottish hospitality did not disappoint with the team reporting an enjoyable weekend both on and off the archery course.

The Gents Unlimited group proved to be the most exciting of the weekend with Geriant Thomas and Dave Home in close competition for the guest award. After the first two rounds, Geraint had taken the lead but Dave was just a few points behind, whilst Dennis Watson was in the driving seat for the Scottish title. Day 2 saw Dave fight back strongly but Thomas kept his nerve throughout, taking it down to the wire. Dave Home shot the final end first, securing a new Welsh record and looked have won the group. Next was Dennis Watson who secured the Scottish Championship. Geraint shot last, overtaking Dave to win the guest award and set another new Welsh record, Dave having held it for just five minutes!

It was a similar story in the Gents Freestyle recurve group which quickly saw Andy Logan, Allan Wallace and Mathew Symmonds draw away from the main group. Allan Wallace dominated the early exchanges to take a firm lead by the end of round 1. Round 2 saw Mathew Symmonds make a comeback to take an overnight lead of just five points. Round 3 saw a strong start from Mathew Symmonds but Wallace and Logan gradually clawed their way back into it. At the end of Day 2, Allan Wallace and Mathew Symmonds finished all square.

Bob Lloyd continued to build on his considerable successes so far this season, returning some respectable scores as did Mark Lunn who easily broke the reserve score limit to take the Gents Barebow Recurve guest award.

Mike Penrose put in another solid performance to win the guest Gents Bowhunter Unlimited division whilst Andrew Lloyd enjoyed a close competition of Rhys Shingler of Drum Field Archers in the Bowhunter Limited group, both archers winning their respective divisions.

The Welsh Team with the Ashall and Linton families

The team wishes to thank the members of the SFAA for a most memorable weekend and for their excellent hospitality. We would also like to extend special thanks to Pauline Ashall and her family.
