Handicap Opening Shoot at Brecon The inaugural shoot at the brand new course at Woodland Park, near Brecon well off well with a good turnout. The shoot took place on Sunday 31st of August and featured a Field Round. This shoot was also the first time that the new handicap shoot system was used to test how well it works. The course is reasonably flat at Woodlands Park and the course was well laid. This meant that high scores were essential for a good finish. The handicap system is designed to put all archers of all age groups and shooting styles on an even footing so that everyone present can compete in a single group. Each person is given a handicap based upon the average of their last 3 shoot scores. This system worked well with Yoke Lunn (AFBBR) winning the shoot. Thomas Kerby of Zenith Archers (JMBHR) took second place whilst Llantwit Major Archer Andrew Lloyd took third place shooting AMBU. The current plan is to arrange transport of all the Welsh competitors. Most of the team will be staying at a local hotel and there is also the choice of camping at a nearby site. If you are interested in entering this tournament and wish to book yourself in for travel with the Welsh team and/or accommodation, please contact Geraint Thomas. For details of the tournament and entry form, click here. The 2008 UK & I of I Championships was hosted by the EFAA at Whitemark Bowmen near High Wycombe on July 5th and 6th. Despite wind and rain, some high scores were submitted. Welsh archers Geraint Thomas and Yoke Lunn won gold in the AMFU and AFBBR divisions but a lack of strength in depth meant that Wales did not fair so well at the team event. A full report will follow shortly. |
New Grand Bow Master The WFAA General Committee is pleased to congratulate Nigel Kent of Llantwit Major Archers on his becoming a Grand Bow Master. Nigel has impressed since starting field archery two years ago. After initially shooting Compound Freestyle, Nigel moved over to the Bowhunter Unlimited group and never looked back. His progress has been meteoric and few have seen a beginner progress to A class level as quickly. Within 12 months of beginning archery, Nigel was regularly posting A class scores and he was rewarded for his achievements with a place on the Welsh National Squad in March this year. Nigel
soon proved his worth by taking the bronze medal at the Welsh & Open
Championships in April and another bronze at the UK & Irish Championships
in July. Nigel is the sixth Welsh archer to achieve this accolade since it
was introduced in 2006. The other Grand Bow Masters are: Welsh Archers Compete at Cartel Classic Welsh archers Geraint Thomas and Tapani Kalmaru competed at the Cartel Classic pro tournament in Mullenborn, Germany on the 28th and 29th of June. This year's tournament is the second year that the Cartel Classic has been running and it exclusively includes male and female professional unlimited archers. After a successful start last year, this year's event has attracted top archers from both Europe and the USA. Geraint Thomas got off to a good start on Day 1, but the difficulty of the course made scores look ordinary. Thomas was tackling the shots well until he made a sighting error that pushed him down the table. Tap Kalmaru, who is rising start on the FITA field circuit, impressed on his IFAA debut, completing the first round in 19th position. Both archers had a good second round with Tap finishing in 19th position and Geraint in 23rd. Given the difficulty of the courses and the quality of European and US based archers competing, the Welsh duo did well to finish in the middle of the table. Welsh Champs Completed Despite Disasters The Welsh & Open Championships completed on the 20th of April with some fine weather. This went some way to make good the disastrous developments on the previous day which led to the cancellation of the Field round.
High winds brought down an oak tree which then demolished high voltage overhead power lines. The line crashed to the ground narrowly missing a group of archers on target 17. As a result the course was evacuated and the Field round cancelled. This meant that no scores were submitted and it was all down to the Hunter Round on day 2 to decide the Championship. Luckily, the weather was calm on the Sunday and shooting continued on the south course only. The WFAA would like to offer our apologies to the competitors who were unable to complete the first round. The circumstances were beyond our control on this occasion. However, we would like to applaud those same competitors for returning on Sunday to ensure that the Championship was successful. |

Symmonds was the only entrant from Wales and he was adopted temporarily by the Scottish team for the duration of the tournament.
